Held in the summer, The Queen’s Plate is Canada’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. Heralded as one of the most prestigious and coveted races in the country, the race is a showcase for three-year-olds bred in Canada. Because it is held after the American Triple Crown, it also offers a horse the chance to compete in the Queens’ Plate after attempting the Kentucky Derby. The race traditionally draws horses from all across North America and from the top barns in both the United States and Canada.
With a lengthy and storied history since it began in 1860, the Queen’s Plate has routinely attracted some of the brightest stars of the sport. The legendary farm, Sam-Son Farm, has produced a remarkable five Queen’s Plate winners including the iconic filly, Dance Smartly, who became the first female to sweep the Canadian Triple Crown in 1991. She in turn produced two Queen’s Plate winners, Scatter the Gold and Dancethruthedawn to continue on the legacy of Sam-Son Farms.
