2016 Northern Dancer Contenders
The field has been set for the 2016 edition of the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes and the prestigious Grade 1 event has drawn a competitive field of eight colts and geldings.
The up-and-coming gelding, World Approval, tops the field as the 2-1 morning line favorite for trainer Mark Casse. He will need to rebound off of a disappointing performance in the Arlington Million (G1) but prior to that race, he notched his first Grade 1 victory in the United Nations Handicap (G1) and has been knocking heads with the top U.S. turf horses all summer.
Chad Brown is locked and loaded with two strong contenders in the race, Wake Forest (GER) at 5-2 and Big Blue Kitten at 4-1 on the morning line. Wake Forest, another competitor trying to improve off of a poor race at Arlington, won the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park earlier in the summer. Veteran eight-year-old Big Blue Kitten is a multiple Grade 1 winner and was the Eclipse Award winning champion turf horse in 2015 though he has yet to hit the board from two starts this year.
Also in the field and a legitimate contender is Canada’s Danish Dynaformer, winner of the Breeders’ Stakes and second in the Queen’s Plate last year. He is a proven winner over the Woodbine turf course and was last seen finishing a competitive fifth in the Arlington Million (G1).
Here is the field for the 2016 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes along with morning line odds.
1. Button Down, 15-1
2. Big Blue Kitten, 4-1
3. Majeed (GB), 15-1
4. Wake Forest (GER), 5-2
5. Camp Creek, 20-1
6. World Approval, 2-1
7. The Pizza Man, 8-1
8. Danish Dynaformer, 6-1

Born on Windfields Farm near Oshawa, Northern Dancer was Canada’s Juvenile champion in 1963, capturing four stakes victories. In his three-year-old season he won the Florida Derby, the Bluegrass Stakes, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Queen’s Plate. Retired with a foot injury, he went on to become the most successful sire and grandsire in North American racing history. He sired 127 stakes winners, including the winner of the English Triple Crown. He was the first horse to command a $1 million stud fee, and his line has produced more Breeders' Cup winners than any other sire.
