The Dance Smartly Stakes has been run consecutively since its inception in 1986 and has been won by such notable runners as Bessarabian (1986), Bold Ruritana (1996), and Marketing Mix (2012). Well-established Canadian trainer Roger Attfield has won the race three times, claiming victories in 1987, 2002, and 2005. The race's namesake was inducted to both the Canadian and United Stakes racing halls of fame after winning major races in both countries from 1990 to 1992. Most importantly, Dance Smartly was the first Canadian-bred horse to win a Breeders' Cup race after winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 1991. Dance Smartly was a Canadian Triple Crown winner in 1991 sweeping the Queen's Plate, Prince of Wales, and Breeders' Stakes.
