Bet on the Prince of Wales Stakes
The Prince of Wales Stakes, the second jewel in the Canadian Thoroughbred Triple Crown is a $500,000 Grade I (Can) race, going 1 3/16 miles over the dirt course at Fort Erie Racetrack. Although first run in 1929, the race was not run every year, until it became a permanent feature of the Canadian stakes calendar in 1947. Between 1959 and 1987, the Prince of Wales was run on the turf, and has been contested over five different distances.

What makes the Canadian Triple Crown unique from the US series is that all three races are run over different surfaces, and for the second leg, handicappers have the challenge of deciding if the Queen's Plate winner can transfer form from polytrack to the dirt. Our recommended racebooks offer tips to make that a little bit easier.

2016 Prince of Wales Contenders
Following on the heels of his half-length victory in the Queen's Plate at odds of 16-1, Sir Dudley Diggs continues his quest for the Canadian Triple Crown as he will break from the outside post of eight as the morning line favorite for the Prince of Wales stakes at odds of 2-1. He'll be challenged by several others coming out of the Plate, including runner-up and pre-race favorite Amis Gizmo who is listed at 5-2, and third-place finisher All On Red (7-2). The former managed to clear the field into the stretch in the Plate but was caught by the winner with just a sixteenth to go and could benefit from the cutback of exactly that distance here. The late-running All On Red will face the challenge of less distance to work with and having to stay with the field around the much tighter cornering at Fort Erie compared to the big sweeping turns at Woodbine.
Of the newcomers, Battery (8-1) ran sixth in the Plate Trial Stakes, after trying graded-stakes company in the Louisiana Derby where he was overmatched to finish last of 10. He has been a force in the allowance ranks in Florida, but needs to take a step forward to compete with these. Mark Casse returns with the highly regarded Leavem In Malibu (5-1), who had some trip problems in the Plate and should get a better run here, but he too has to prove he can win at the stakes level.

Over the years, the Prince of Wales has witnessed a number of firsts in Canadian horse racing. In 1995, trainer Barbara Minshall became the first woman to saddle a Canadian Triple Crown winner, when Kiridashi took the victory under jockey Larry Attard. The next year, Kiridashi would finish fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. In 2003, the first father-daughter jockey combination would run the race, as David Clark finished third with Shoal Water, while daughter Cory Clark guided her mount, Sonofawac, to a sixth-place finish.
